Cinereo, the big grey bird.

This is Cinereo.

He's a five year old African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) who has lived with us since he was four months old. He, like most of my parrots, is flighted and is a pretty good flier, particularly since he did not learn until after he was one year old.

He's always held a strong preference for, well, anyone who isn't me. I've put in several years worth of work and we have finally started a pretty decent relationship. Thanks to some food management (for both his motivation levels and his health), we've really started training a few weeks ago.

Current behaviors that we're working on are generalizing step up (which means step from a perch to my hand) and fly to a specific perch on cue. Currently, he'll step up on my hand pretty well from several different places, and will fly to one specific perch in the downstairs on cue.

Who are you?

What do you want? (Sorry, bit of geek humor there.)

Hi! Welcome to the rational parrot blog. My name is Stephanie, and as you may have guessed, I have parrots. The purpose of this blog will be to chronicle my training adventures with my birds for myself and others.

When I'm not working to feed the zoo, I spend time helping as a Tutor and Threadleader on ParrotBAS list on yahoogroups, I moderate the Parrot Lovers community on livejournal, and I post pictures of my life at my livejournal.

Next post will introduce the cast of characters and what I'm currently working on with them.
